Nalle Bunny Run Group Walk 2016-04-24

Last Sunday morning 5 folks joined me for the monthly group walk on Hill Country Conservancy's Nalle Bunny Run Wildlife Preserve in west Austin. The group was small because this was a makeup date from the previous weekend which was rained out. But we could not have asked for better weather this morning with comfortable temperatures, intermittent cloud cover, and a nice light breeze.

The birding was fun. By the gate we watched a migrating Broad-winged Hawk soar to gain altitude and then drift north. Near the northeast corner we got decent looks at a female Pyrrhuloxia. Some returning summer residents we enjoyed were many Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, heard-only Northern Parula, great looks at singing Yellow-throated Vireo and Yellow-throated Warbler, a male Black-chinned Hummingbird surveying its territory, and Summer Tanagers.

On the Nalle family cemetery on the preserve, we had a special moment watching and listening to a male Summer Tanager singing right over Anne Byrd Nalle's grave. It was her wish to create this preserve and I hope she'd be happy with our experiences of the day. Here's one of the group watching the tanager:

And here's our complete bird list. What a fun morning!
