California Crab Season Delayed to Nov. 23 to Protect Whales From Entanglement.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife today announced a delay of the Nov. 15 opening of commercial Dungeness crab season to reduce the risk of whale entanglements. This preliminary decision to delay the opening to Nov. 23 was based on data indicating the prevalence of whales off California presents an elevated entanglement risk.

A gray whale was discovered washed up on Agate Beach yesterday amid an elevated number of strandings along the west coast of North America this year that has scientists working to uncover the reason for the anomaly.

Curious gray whale and her calf swim up to boat and let tourists stroke them in stunning close encounter.

Adventurer Erik Jones, 39, used a drone to capture stunning aerial footage of the gray whale gliding through the turquoise waters of the San Ignacio Lagoon, on the Baja Peninsula, alongside her calf, to the panga boat.

SeaWorld San Diego’s Rescue Team Disentangles Humpback Whale from Fishing Gear.

The whale was spotted late Thursday by a local birdwatcher. The SeaWorld Rescue Team was able to get on the water to assess the situation early Friday morning and then cut the whale free. The four-hour disentanglement effort took place about one mile from the Scripps Pier, starting at about 9:30 a.m., with the whale swimming free at 1:30 p.m.
