Snapshot CalCoast 2024

Help us gather critical biodiversity data from the California Coast June 1st-June 30th for the 9th annual Snapshot Cal Coast

For the entire month of June, we are asking people to get out to tidepools, docks, marinas, and harbors near them and document as many species as they can. You can find events near you here: https://www.calacademy.org/calcoast

Of course, Snapshot Cal Coast is not only tidepools but all coastal habitats, and we would love any and all observations from anywhere along the coast.

Celebrate California’s 5th Annual Biodiversity Day with More Than 60 Events at More Than 40 California State Parks

This year marks the fifth annual celebration of California Biodiversity Day since it was first established in 2018. Since then, several executive orders and other actions by the Newsom Administration – such as the Pathways to 30x30 strategy, California’s initiative to conserve 30 percent of lands and coastal waters by 2030 – have built on this foundation to understand and protect California’s unique and precious natural resources.

CA Biodiversity Week 2023: Find 30 Species for CA 30x30.

California? Participating is easy! 1. Join this project. 2. Download the iNaturalist app on your phone. 3. During CA Biodiversity Week, find and photograph at least 30 wild species in California. Your observations will automatically end up in this project!

Your observations of plants, animals, fungi, and other species in California will help inform the California 30x30 initiative, to conserve 30% of California's lands and coastal waters by 2030. Go out and explore your neighborhood or local park, take a hike or explore the coast, or join in one of the many CA Biodiversity Week events being held across the state!

Snapshot CalCoast

Snapshot CalCoast is June 17-July 9! Help us document California's incredible biodiversity on your own or at a bioblitz event near you.
For two weeks every year, the California Academy of Sciences—with support from the California Ocean Protection Council, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the MPA (Marine Protected Area) Collaborative Network, and many other partners—mobilizes communities from Del Norte to San Diego to make and share observations of plants, animals, and seaweeds along the California coast using the iNaturalist app. By creating a real-time, statewide snapshot of current species ranges, we're building a community of observers that provides valuable data for scientists at local, regional, and state levels, and answering targeted research questions in support of California Marine Protected Areas.

California started this community science project to document urban nature — now it’s taking over the world!

The World Series of urban nature is here.

The City Nature Challenge is an annual competition that mobilizes communities to document as many species of plant, animal and other types of critters in a four-day period. This year’s event begins Friday and closes on Monday.
