De acuerdo con do Spirito Santo et al. (2019) KEW BULLETIN (2019) 74:30., las especies americanas de Marsdenia se recobran en un clado independiente de las del resto del mundo, por lo que se han transferido al género Ruehssia.
Con base en lo anterior, Alvarado-Cárdenas et al. (2021) Phytoneuron 2021-47: 1–22., transfirieron las especies mexicanas de Marsdenia a Ruehssia.
