Observed and imaged by Brent Fischer and sent for ID.
Big male C. Atrox relocated from this spot, captured by the landowner. Relocation is always a risk, but if it’s the only chance, I’ll show up to help. This one was unusually lively given 58 degree temps. Hopefully he makes it!
Thin snake with light yellow underbelly. Very docile. About 10 inches. It's body is the thickness of a #2 pencil.
The longest native snake species in North America. Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, Cameron County, Texas.
Not confident of ID
While birding, I witnessed the following interaction between a Red-shouldered Hawk and a Great Blue Heron.
Adult ate the remains of a snake at the edge of the pond. A Great Blue Heron approached slowly and stopped near the hawk. It slowly extended its neck and beak closer and closer to the hawk. The hawk splayed wings to make itself bigger. When this didn’t deter the heron, it flew up and struck the heron causing the heron to squawk and fly a short distance away. After a minute or so, the heron walked away and foraged for his own food. 8:32a: The hawk flew to a telephone pole. eBird checklist available at https://ebird.org/checklist/S153841235.
This entry shows the snake.
