It has no limbs and is slender, tube-shaped body is golden-brown with tiny black spots.

The females of the tent tortoise reach about 15cm and the male 10-12cm.
They live for about 25-30years.
The tent tortoise in the Karoo have an extended reproductive season from spring to autumn , they produce small clutches, 1-3 eggs, in a season as a means of coping with low and unpredictable rainfall.
Population density is generally low and appear to be declining slowly.
