Always a privilege to find the Namaqua chameleon, a large, mostly terrestrial species. Spending much of its time wandering across the ground, this chameleon is rarely observed in bushes. Chamaeleo namaquensis is restricted to the western, more arid areas of Southern Africa. Easily recognizable by the large dorsal spines.

We spotted two adult dassies and two juveniles running towards us. Within a minute after they had disappeared into the crevices below us we spotted a mamba slithering in the same direction, just where the dassies had been. It popped out on the other side of the outcrop, where it waited and tasted the air, obviously unsuccessful in catching one of the dassies. It became aware of us as we took photos, but did not seem very concerned and starting climbing the outcrop we were standing on, eventually entering another crevice just below us and causing the dassies to scatter.
