Struggling to eat a small Giant Pacific Octopus on the pocket beach south of Pier 62 during a minus 3 foot tide. The gull made several attempts to swallow it whole, but it appeared to be too big.
First time seeing Barred Owl killed a crow.
The Barred owl ate the crow later on.
Found among many other washed up dead marine animals.
With an unfortunate field vole that was torn to shreds.
Feeding on field vole after field recently ploughed.
Very vocal and active troop of macaques living in caves behind waterfall though at the time it was virtually dried up. At one point there was a fight over a very young macaque (see photos). Often feeding on figs, flowers and performing social grooming.
Pale morph
One of the most brightly coloured ballan's I've ever caught! Note the fluorescent blue spots on the cheek and right pelvic fin, which appears to have split and since healed with a new membrane reconnecting the break. Gut also enormous and bulging - potentially with spawn or perhaps engorged on food. Caught in a deep gulley/ inlet that probably provides shelter and feeding opportunities for fish where large waves are crashing onshore just a short distance away. Sandeel shoal also seen in this inlet.
