I had a passive interest in nature my whole life, beginning with cicadas and trees. My serious interest in nature began when I was about 13, when I saw a Caspian Tern not included in a very basic bird guide and tried to figure out what it was. Since then, I have become fascinated with the natural world as a whole. My greatest areas of interest besides birds are butterflies, bees, and plants. The more obscure groups of plants that I am starting to learn to identify are violets and sedges. I am a junior at Northwestern University, majoring in environmental science. Note: I use iNat to take notes of observations and I am just learning plant ID terminology, so my observation notes may sound very unprofessional - please excuse this.
