At the risk of stating the obvious, the planet is warming. Trees are nature's carbon capture devices, and their presence has a significant localised cooling effect. Forestation has even been shown to increase precipitation and cut evaporation. The rabid local advocacy for pine plantation eradication is akin to cutting off the nose to spite the face. Timber is used in the real world, as a substitute for carbon- and water-intensive mined/industrial products such as concrete and steel. If plantation timber sources are reduced or eradicated, we worsen the climate outcome. In that scenario, fynbos is also the victim.

Co-existence is possible.
Cape Town, if you want to prevent the next day zero, then start planting trees, everywhere, and start building your houses out of timber.
