I am an amateur wildlife photographer with a keen interest in recording nature especially in my local area. I have taken on a project to hopefully help our local Angling Association increase the biodiversity in and around their fishing lakes. Our little town, like many others all over the nation, is fast being built on and our nature corridors have been written off to industrial sites and sprawling housing developments. The Walrow fishing lakes in Highbridge, Somerset used to be a brick factory and the clay pits dug for that purpose now comprises three lakes and small woodland squeezed between the railway line to the west and industrial estate and motorway to the east. This is home to me and our community are waking up to the damage done to our local ecology. The fishing committee and volunteers are doing an amazing job in upgrading the lakes, removing scrap, landscaping, recycling, planting trees and flowers, building bird and bat boxes and creating homes for all sorts of creatures. We will be making a wildlife pond in the future too. I have done a badger survey, advised on grassland maintenance, the creation of dead hedging, log piles and encouraging the maintenance teams to be more aware of how important it is to embrace a scruffier approach to the upkeep of their precious pocket of land. I also gently educate everyone about the wildlife wonders they have and can have in the future right under their noses. Together we are fighting for nature and making our bit of the world a better place to be in.
