Jueves 15 febrero

I heard the call of the Cinnamon-bellied Saltator (Northern Gray Saltator) again this morning after not hearing it the past two days. There was a brief but violent wind storm on Monday evening after sunset (an electrical transformer serving the Avalon Condominiums was exploded by a touching branch). I was worried that the bird had decided to move on to a safer place.

I heard the call for the first time on the morning of February 6 and then again on subsequent mornings. Each time a short whistle with a rising pitch ending in a note higher than the start (like the first part of a wolf whistle).

On our walk this morning along Los Muertos beach, we saw four boobies fishing around the Los Muertos pier and saw one dive into the water ! Also, pelicans, terns and gulls on the rocks just off the shore of the beach to the south of the Seapal mirador at the foot of calle Amapas.

End of Season

My strategy this year has been to confine myself to the parks and ravines in my immediate neighbourhood which, much to my surprise and delight, has yielded unexpected results in terms of sheer number and diversity. What is just as surprising is that I seem to be the only member posting observations from these locations.

October 31, 2023 End of the Season

There was frost overnight in our neighborhood. I could see traces of frost on the roof of the building on the other side of the courtyard as I made my coffee at 7:30 this morning. It has been a wonderful season !

On our route into the David Balfour Ravine via Pricefield Road and then south to Mount Pleasant Road to the Park Drive Reservation Trail.

We saw several Red Admirals and cabbage whites and also one Eastern Comma on the Park Drive Reservation Trail.

Also a damselfly peeched on a leaf in the sunshine part way up Milkmen’s Lane.

A walk along the Park Drive Reservation Trail and up Milkmen’s Lane and home through Rosedale netted some old flowers and new trees.

Amanda send along a photo of a plasterer bee (cellophane bee) that she saw in Thornecliffe Park.
