Bottom Trawl @250 Fathoms deep (roughly 1500 feet)
25th January 2021, off Southport, SE-Queensland Australia (returning from Britannia Seamount). This 'arrow squid' jumped on board over night and died. Any idea on ID to species level? Thanks.
Killed by a sperm whale
Fresh Calamari!
Found floating on the surface of the water right on the edge of Challenger Bank, where the bank quickly drops from 250 feet to well over 1000. Highly likely a Cuvier’s Beaked Whale kill as they are regularly seen in this area. I have the specimen frozen to take to the museum if it’s something new for them.
Discovered one morning on the bow
In baited pot set at 648 meters in northern Chatham Strait.
Large size and claw-like curved hooks distinguish this species from all other gonatiids.
We found 2 of these washed up on our beach yesterday
