Turtle found retracted into shell, after near-miss with car while trying to cross road. Large, about 10" from front to back of shell. Did not emerge so could not further document markings, but at least appeared unharmed.
Placed turtle in safe location in direction it was heading.
Abundant in and around backyard water garden. Surrounded by loudly calling males but did not call back, so may be a small female.
There were multiple on my patio beneath damp leaf litter
LOR. This was a small copperhead [approximately 38 centimeters (about 15 inches) long] seen basking in the late afternoon sun at the edge of an unpaved road. The coarse gravel may have provided warmth to the snake as the day had been a rather cool one for May in MS.
