I recognized this Madrone - Arbutus menziesii by the beautiful cinnamon red colored bark that is peeling. I did not not note any fruiting or flowering. The I ate leaves are deep green, leathery with a high gloss. The tree itself was about 40’ tall but still an understory tree in comparison to the evergreen cedars.
This shrub was peaking out from beneath vines and other foliage. The alternate leaves are deep shiny green and sharply toothed. There was no sign of flowers or fruit.
