I first found the flopping tail, then the motionless slowworm on the ground. He feigned death while the tail flopped back and forth vigorously and incessantly. He only started moving after I tapped him twice. Before I arrived at the scene I saw a bird of prey flying away. I assume he lost the tail in the interaction with the bird but I did not witness any of that. Surprisingly the raptor did not take either the slowworm or the tail. The flopping tail was very effective at diverting attention from the injured slowworm.
