Description

Was reviewing my Macrotona securiformis photo's and found this specimen. I'm pretty sure I've incorrectly id'ed it.

@matthew_connors @robert_read @rover-rod @cinclosoma

I've gone thru all the SA Macrotona's here to see if I could find some information about it.
In da book, page 292, we have a perfectly matching live photo of Macrotona sp 23, which doesn't match the dead images. SO ANNOYING!

  1. Primarily (most obviously) there's an extra stripe behind the eye,
  2. but also the forehead is grey, not white,
  3. the rear leg stripes aren't solid black, but dappled/cross-hatched black,
  4. the wing spotting is in different place,
  5. the antenna are pale, but still with a white tip,
  6. wood-grain eyes,
  7. ventrally dull greenish, not bright lime-green,
  8. abdomen, dorsally, not much red.
    I'm not sure if this enough to say it's not Macrotona securiformis.

  9. However, I think the blue tibias & feet are enough.

As such, I think there are a number of mis-id's on iNat. If people agree (ergo no stripe on Inland), I'll go and lift them to genus.

But can I mark them (with what text? "Striped-cheek Macrotona"?) with an observation field to group them and should they go into the "Australian grasshoppers not featured in A Guide to Australian Grasshoppers and Locusts" project? Or is this M. sp 23 where the dead images are the mistake, not the live photo?
