Growing on the remains of conifer needles and broadleaf debris in a muddy bog with shallow standing water. Pinus contorta contorta, Gaultheria shallon, and Vaccinium ovatum are the dominant species surrounding.
Did not observe spores under a scope to confirm species, but the similar European species M. paludosa is not thought to occur in the US (Redhead, S.A. 1977 The genus Mitrula in North America)
One sporocarp collected is 2.5cm tall, fertile head is 5mm long and 3mm wide.
