Eyelash Cups (Genus Scutellinia)

Observer

Date

March 10, 2019 03:02 PM PDT

Description

A cluster of Eyelash Cup Fungus (Scutellinia scutellata group), photographed at the Canyon Picnic Area of Stevens Creek County Park in western Santa Clara County, CA. Scutellinia scutellata is apparently a catch-all designation for several related species of cup fungi that are poorly studied and therefore poorly understood. As a group, however, they are fairly distinctive. Key traits are the cup or disc-like shape, orange to deep orange-red color, and hairy margin of the cap.

Overall dimensions: The largest of these cup fungi was approximately 1 cm in diameter.
