Los Romaleinae poseen -con excepción de la tribu Trybliophorini - un mecanismo de estridulación que consiste en bordes de estridulación y resonador situados en las alas traseras, y un borde en la parte inferior de las alas anteriores (Riede 1987). Por medio del frotamiento de ambos se origina un sonido de amplio espectro, que a través del ritmo de los movimientos de las alas es estructurado rítmicamente. En días soleados, el fuerte canto de los machos de Prionacris cantans es un elemento esencial de la cortina de sonidos de la selva amazónica. Los grupos de sonidos, de una longitud de entre 5-10 s son producidos entre 10 y 60 s.; para producirlos, el macho no abandona su posición en las copas de los árboles. En lugares apropiados, los cantores se hallan alejados entre sí de 10 y 50 m, de modo que por lo general varios machos pueden ser escuchados al mismo tiempo. Es probable que el canto regule la distancia en que se hallan los machos entre sí; esto podría ser determinado por medio de una detallada cartografización realizada por medio de un micrófono direccional. Esta especie es llamada por los Siona-Secoya onomatopéyicamente enseterá ponsú (Ensé: sol; ponsú: saltamonte).
