Pepsis grossa appeared to be foraging and moved quickly about on the ground as it inspected naturally occurring small crevices beside the trail. Pepsis grossa occurs in two color forms according to BugGuide: “Very large, with two color forms: Orange-winged (xanthic) and black-winged (melanic). The two color forms are not often seen in the same locality.” Its genus, Pepsis, is one of Tarantula Hawks. See BugGuide: http://bugguide.net/node/view/103629
