Narrow-leaf Drumsticks (Isopogon anethifolius)

Observer

Description

This shrub was identified as family Proteaceae due to hard, simple leaves and the distinct inflorescence. PlantNet allowed me to identify the globose inflorescence as an Isopogon. Robinson described both Isopogon anemonifolius and Isopogon anethifolius as having a yellow flower surrounded by yellow bracts, both matching the specimen. As the shrub has narrow, terete leaves, it can be identified as a Isopogon anethifolius, rather than the Isopogon anemonifolius which has flattened, wider leaves. Robinson describes this species to be restricted to Sydney Sandstone and this was identified on sandstone heath.

Description

This dense shrub was identified as family Myrtaceae due to the woody fruit/capsule present and the presence of oil glands in the leaves, which was difficult to capture on camera. The leaves were large and ovate, with a bluish green colour and covered in hairs as described in Robinson. The bark was dark and rough, matching the colouring and description of fibrous-flaky bark on PlantNet.
The juvenile inflorescences were covered in red hairs as specified in Robinson, with no mature cream inflorescences present. The relatively large woody capsules were the size specified (15mm – 25 mm) on both sources. This was found in sandstone woodland, it’s endemic habitat.

Sweet Wattle (Acacia suaveolens)

Description

This plant is from the Fabaceae family due to the fruit being a pod (legume). With the absence of the flower, the legume and phyllodes were used to identify into the subfamily Mimosoideae.
The phyllodes matched the plant net description of narrow, glabrous and having a prominent midvein. The arrangement matched with the spirally arranged on stiff stems description in Robinson. The legume was wide, with green and purple colouring present, matching the description/picture in both sources perfectly. Similar acacias in the region such as Acacia Stricta has a far narrower/stringy legume, therefore this plant was identified mainly from the distinctive legume. This shrub was identified on sandstone heath, in a coastal region, within its distribution range.
