Chicita's Sea Storm Lichen (Cetrelia chicitae)

Observer

johnfranklin

Date

April 28, 2020 11:26 PM EDT

Description

Called Sea-storm Lichens because they are always "wavy and rough" looking. Found on Old Growth trees and also on open mossy rocks. Cetrelia chicitae is a Selva List Old Growth Indicator Species only when found corticolous, on trees.

This sample and others were found saxicolous, on rocks. The forests at the Slabsides Nature Sanctuary are unfortunately no longer Old Growth, but some of the ancient rocks here are covered with this rare lichen. In time, they may spread back onto the older trees here.
There are 4 Cetrelia species in this area that are so similar they need chemical tests to separate: C. chicitae, C. monachorum, C. cetrarioides, and C. olivetorum.

Located on open rock in mixed sun and shade at the John Burroughs - Slabsides Nature Sanctuary, Esopus, NY.

A small sample of this lichen was collected with permission of Joan Burroughs, and sent to the New York Botanical Garden in NYC, for laboratory identification. It was chemically identified by Dr. James C. Lendemer as:
Cetrelia chicitae (W.L.Culb.) W.L.Culb. & C.F.Culb.,
and retained in the Steere Herbarium. Sample SLB-1004, catalogNumber 04275244

This actual identified and retained sample can be located here:
https://lichenportal.org/portal/collections/individual/index.php?occid=4987491&clid=0

A World Map showing this sample, and other known CNALH Sample locations, can be found here. Scroll into the map for closer range:
