Flowers in peak bloom on this date, noticeably ahead of Crataegus flabellata nearby. As nice as these look, I find they have a sour, "fishy" odour.

Leaves have "wide-spreading", sharp-tipped lobes. The tips are also slightly reflexed if you look closely. The plant is largely glabrous, with some fine hairs on the underside veins of young leaves only (normal for the species, may not be visible at all in these photos), except for the corymbs (flower clusters) which are pubescent. Thorns very long (although I didn't show one next to a ruler). The few flowers that are open show 10-12 stamens and pink anthers.

This species was largely in bud on this date, and clearly behind nearby Crataegus submollis in overall flowering time. Also these flowers do not have the "fishy" smell that C. submollis often does.
