I thought it was a dead octopus, lying on the bottom. I picked it up to examine it and take a picture. I slowly realized it was still alive. I felt water coming out of the syphon and its tentacles lightly hanging on to me.
IT only had two tentacles left and seemed weak. It didn't seem very safe out on the open sandy bed, so I took it over to the rock jetty to leave it there where it might find a cubby hole to heal in.
At the rocks it was able to change color and slowly slip away into a crevice.

Yet, another little toad from this day. Although I posted 3 (what I believe to be) little Southern Toads seen this day, this one to my eyes was a different pattern and overall shape. The suggestions here did not include Southern Toad (it gave me the "unsure". All the oak toads seem to have that white line down the back not present in this one. Could this be Fowler's??? not sure.

I was going south and it continued running down the trail, taking breaks to check on me until it eventually moved off the trail.
Seen during the 2021 Homestead Christmas Bird Count. I was covering a large area that is part of the Frog Pond WMA on my trusty old Specialized stumpjumper and rode just under 20 miles total and hiked for about 3 miles.
