Predation photos from yesterday. Videos are available on my Facebook account. This was early in the morning, and the pod had already eaten most of one sea lion before we arrived. At one point during predation #2, two humpback whales came in from about a mile away to disrupt the hunt! 😲 Amazing! There's video, but no still photos. But the orcas were too quick and numerous to be deterred for long. Oddly, when the second sea lion was dead, it was joined by a third sea lion out of nowhere which stayed close to the carcass despite the milling orcas (another separate observation for this crazy sea lion). Neither was eaten by the time we left. Thank you Blue Ocean Whale Watch for the opportunity to experience this event!
Update: Josh McInnes tells me the orca pod is the OCT044As (including two calves) and the male is OCT016B.
