Crown rust is a destructive pathogen on some commercial grain crops (oats, barley, rye) and it completes a portion of its life cycle on its alternate hosts, Common and Glossy Buckthorn. There is some hope, but not yet concrete evidence, that this rust fungus might help to control infestations of invasive buckthorns, as well as Reed canary grass.
