I’m not 100% as I didn’t closely observe the keels before release… maybe there is enough details in the pictures to tell. If I am wrong let me know.

Small, unfortunately dead, snake seen on a walk in Holmes Park this morning. Out of the woods by about 10 feet and out of grassy pasture by about 3 feet
Greenesnake asked about likely cause of death. No certainty. The pasture had been mowed a day or so earlier. Lots of foot traffic as well though.

This is a scan of a photo in a field ecology journal of mine. I used to teach a field ecology course at Des Moines Area Community College. The dates and locations of this observation was recorded in the journal.
The scan quality is not the greatest but I have only included pictures of organisms that I think are identifiable.

In the excitement of getting a herp lifer I was a fool and didn't get a photo before trying to grab the critter. It escaped my grasp and dove into the underbrush. I'm so sad. But supposedly field sketches are allowed so here's mine.
