This observation is a part of the long-term monitoring efforts of Gustav Paulay and his team at FLMNH and Friday Harbor Labs. 

Although this observation also falls within the boundaries of the MarineGEO iNaturalist umbrella project (which is an ongoing collaborative work between MarineGEO and the Tennenbaum Marine Observatories Network, the Florida Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History Museum, and our network partners), this is not from a MarineGEO specific campaign.

2005, Northern Kentucky University's Costa Rican Natural History course. We spent a couple of days in the cloud forest at Finca de Quetzales. A morning hike to hunt for quetzals was more of a plant-viewing expedition for me. This Peperomia was interesting both because it's something you can't see in the forests of Kentucky, and because it had red insect galls decorating its inflorescences.

Found this Isopod about a quarter mile into a cave in Augusta County Virginia, I’m trying to find exactly what species it is. It was in a small muddy puddle with about 10 other smaller isopods. Lacks pigment, no eyes, yet moved surprisingly quickly. It was about an inch long.

I am quite literally begging anybody with experience with amphipods to help me ID this because MAN it was cool to see! Scroll through to photo #2 for a close up of the amphipod in question.

Watched this dipper catch amphipods in a semi marine environment where xwesam (Roberts Creek) runs into the ocean. Honestly, would consider going back and diving here just to find out what these are.
