Northern Ribbon Snake (Thamnophis saurita ssp. septentrionalis)

Observer

pantherophis

Date

November 7, 2021 04:36 PM EST

Description

In addition to being a cool late season find (on top of a rock ridge, beside some Ulmus thomasii), this was the largest and chunkiest Ribbon I have ever seen. It had survived a predation attempt and had many healed scars to show for it, including the loss of its tail. It had the form and heft of an adult female Thamnophis s. sirtalis, so I was initially thinking this was a female. However, @bobbyfingers pointed out this snake is a eunuch (male). In the last photo, you can see that the tail was amputated only four ventral scales away from the vent, likely sterilizing the snake in the process. The resulting hormone changes have produced a bigger, fatter individual than a fertile male.

This snake is +/- 75 cm in length, just under the normal upper limit for the species. However, in this subspecies the tail is normally 1/3 of the total length, and this snake has no tail.

This is one of those salamanders that seems to turn up in places where it doesn't seem like they could physically fit there. The amount of space under that rock did not seem big enough for a salamander this fat.

Observed during fieldwork conducted under a research permit.

This was one of the more exciting incidental finds of the day. This is the first park record, and the easternmost record for this species in Ontario.

No search effort was made here. I casually moved one single log - really a thick branch - as @owenclarkin and I crossed a small stream in a ravine.

The second photo in the sequence is actually the first, in the cavity of the log. The grey colour and silt is from a marine clay (Leda clay) deposit that this stream was cutting through. The salamander then swam into the stream and posed on the stick in the first-in-sequence photo.
