Ran partway across the street before stopping dead in its tracks right in front of my car, frozen by the headlights. Allowed very close approach but a gentle tap of its tail sent it back on its way.
Merriam's because of the dusky tail tip?

Description
We were walking in the dark with our headlamps on and came upon this mouse and lizard. From the way the lizard acted, very still with only its head moving, we think it was in a bad way. The mouse appears to be taking advantage of the immobile lizard and consuming its flesh. We did not actually see it biting the lizard's body but it was positioned like it was eating something when we view the photo. I checked online and did not see any natural history of mice eating a reptile. It's usually the other way around.

First island record! Initially seen during PIGU diet watch flying around lighthouse hill around 10:30, where first ID was suggested as a rosy-finch based on distinctive coloration, especially the combination of rosy red underside, gray and black head and solid black, thick bill. Seen briefly around 11:30 at lighthouse perched on ladder, but quickly flushed out of sight. Later seen in annex of garbage gulch around 15:35, where it offered good views for roughly 5 minutes before flying off to other side of gulch. Also seen perched on lighthouse ladder railing around 17:30. Continued on island for three days total, not seen after.

So far I haven't found any pics of one with quite this color pattern, though pics of L. dennyi look the closest. Thought it was a slug or a flatworm so I foolishly tried to pick it up to put it in a dish for more photos and it swam away.
