this thing was found in a small cliffside, tucked away in a nook, at first i thought it was a root but then i picked it up and it was super light and porous it had small holes in it, which makes me thinks its a gall of some kind, but it was underground so i am very confused

The full story: I went outside to go for a walk, picked up one of my boots, and started to put it on. They’re almost too small, so I had to do some wiggling to get my foot in. I often don’t wear socks in my shoes, so yell at me if you want but I think it was a good thing in this case. My foot was most of the way in when it touched something furry. I froze, trying to figure out what it was. It didn’t move either. Then I yanked my foot back out and looked inside, and there was a little rodent in there! It's probably a baby rat. I pinched the top of the boot shut before it could get out and called to my mom that I needed my camera right now, and I probably shouldn’t come in the house because I was holding a boot with a rat in it. She brought my camera out and I took some adorable pictures of it before it ran back into the toe. Then I dumped it out and it ran away.

I did see a squirrel ball up the fur and running away with it but not staying there

23 - Additional gall has only a slight stem, making it appear (to the eye) on the leaf surface

Video Link: https://youtu.be/VByatNDqJ64

More details:

  • I used a razor blade and plastic tweezers for dissection
  • Some photos are with my Samsung S9 cell phone camera, others with my Olympus and a 60mm macro lens. (Next time I'll switch to a diff lens to get better pics.)
  • Microscopic views are at 40x. I tried to get 100x images of the mites, but I'll need to find a way to separate them from the gall for next time.
  • Microscopic images are taken with my cell phone held up to the microscope eye piece. Not the best solution, but it worked for a first try. I've requested a SEM for Christmas. ;)
  • Video is taken the same way as the microscopic still images. Note that the lens on lens caused distortion, and the camera tries to auto-focus as well. Things I'll try to find a better solution to for next time.
