I was on a jog on New Years Eve in my neighborhood when a medium-large butterfly was flying around a patch of Lantana. It was 84 degrees and sunny ahead of the strong cold front that was going to bring in freezing temperatures the next day. The butterfly wouldn’t land so I continued on my jog. Curiosity got the best of me so I circled back about 10 minutes later and couldn’t believe my eyes. I finally got to see a Malachite with my own eyes completely out of its normal range. I’ve never had luck seeing one on my trips to the NBC in Mission, TX. I took several pictures with my iPhone and tried to get a slow motion video of it flying. The video didn’t focus well while it was in flight. I posted it after my jog to the Facebook group Texas Birds and Butterflies which garnered a lot of attention. Another member of the group said she and her husband saw one in S SE Austin that day as well in the comments section. What an amazing treat!
