Tilapia were discovered in the ponds on Kiawah Island in the early 1990s. They were apparently stocked in the late 1980s by a contracted aquatic plant management company as a biological control method for aquatic vegetation.
They have thrived and proliferated throughout the system of ponds, being found in salinities as high as 25 ppt and water temperatures as low as 48° F. They also have been documented surviving in ponds that iced over and, although there were sporadic die-offs because of cold temperatures, the longer they continue to exist here, the more genetic selection there will be for cold temperature tolerance.
