The sage had large, thick, white-gray leaves with fragrance, dead/dying branches, and lots of dead matter surrounding it. These grew only in intact stands of Coastal Sage Scrub, which were tough to find in this grassland-dominated region.

The shrub was deciduous, with green leaves, fleshy stems, and large, yellow flowers with brown, seedy centers. Usually common in most Coastal Sage Scrub environments, in this case the encelia was an uncommon species.
