Canvasback x Redhead (hybrid) (Aythya valisineria x americana) - 15 March 2024 - Eagle Lake--Heahnle Sanctuary, Leoni Township, Jackson County, Michigan
Adult male swimming with group of Redheads. The back and sides of this individual were very pale in comparison to the male Redheads, and more like Canvasback. It appeared to be a bit larger the an the Redheads. The forehead appeared to be less steep and more sloped than the neighboring Redheads. This group of birds was very distant, maybe 300 - 400 yards away. I have some poor distant shots taken with my Nikon P1000 to add.

Rescued this Redhead today. It had a fishhook in its bill / face, and the fishing line it was attached to was frozen into the ice and the bird was trapped. Captured the bird, broke the fishing line, and then, with a friend, cut the fishhook in half and removed it from the duck's bill / face. It seemed vigorous and healthy. When we released it, it flew away strong and fast. Good deed done.

March, 2017 nature journal entry; Walton County, Georgia. A flurry of back and forth flights directed my eye to a tree stump leaning over the water’s edge. Brown-headed Nuthatches (Sitta pusilla) were making runs to a small opening in the stump and disappearing in the shadowy hole. Zooming in, I saw the incoming flights carried small pieces of... http://williamwisephoto.com/photographyblog/nuthatch-nest
