Dead, its tail was hanging out of the mouth of a small California kingsnake which was crawling along the side of the trail at 5:30 pm. There were still large puddles from rain in the morning. I had know idea there were blind snakes here, and I assume this species has never been found here before, at least not recently. Just double check the pics in case I'm missing something, but I'm not sure what else it could be. Oh, and in case anyone is wondering, the kingsnake didn't its meal, even though I picked him up before I saw the blind snake.

This is pretty horrible but... interesting. A King Snake (the second one we saw) returned to the pond area and somehow grabbed a lizard, and ate it. I was lucky to be there with my camera but felt sorry for the little herp - I like lizards
Strangely, the wild birds were coming VERY close to the snake, even hovering over it as though they were going to strike it and these were small birds of varying types. I don't know if they're curious or threatened but they aren't very smart! That King Snake is fast." - Virginia Tucker
