An iNat meet-up and outing in Southern California this November

Hello everyone,

Some of you will probably remember a similar message from me about an outing last year, a message which I sent out a few weeks earlier than this.
Here is last year's message and a thread of replies:
https://www.inaturalist.org/journal/susanhewitt/69532-an-inat-meet-up-and-outing-in-southern-california-in-september-2022

I (@susanhewitt) who normally lives in NYC, will again be staying at the Moonlight Beach Motel in Encinitas, San Diego North County, for 16 nights, this time from the evening of Sunday October 29th to the early afternoon of Tuesday November 14th.

I would love to be part of an iNat meetup and nature walk on at least one day during that time span, so some planning will be necessary. I am familiar with some of the more obvious aspects of the wild flora and fauna of coastal San Diego North County fairly well after many visits, and after having lived in La Jolla and Pacific Beach in 1970/71. My taxon of special expertise is mollusks -- I know the Southern California shelled marine mollusks quite well.

I am assuming that a Saturday or a Sunday would be the best day for most people to do a meet-up? There is the weekend of the 4th and 5th November, and the weekend of the 11th and 12th November. As for a destination, I was thinking maybe of the San Elijo Lagoon again, or maybe the Torrey Pines preserve, although I guess autumn is not the best season for iNatting at Torrey Pines.

For any other suggested destinations, I would be glad to listen to ideas from other people. I won't have a car, but I can get out somewhere using a taxi or a bus.

Last year the outing took place on Sunday Sept 18th 2022, starting at 9 am in the morning. It was at
the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve and Nature Center, accessed at 2710 Manchester Ave, Cardiff, CA 92007. Parking is limited in their lot, but there is also a separate lot across the street. The iNatters who attended last year were the following folks:

@susanhewitt -- Susan
@u_phantasticus -- Elena
@arboretum_amy -- Amy and her husband Joe
@juliabohemian -- Julia
@anewmark -- Andrew

Last year Vasily Reinkymov suggested that I might ask:

@juliabohemian
@ronvanderhoff
@silversea_starsong
@arboretum_amy
@jmillsand
@miguelgrande
@bugbob
@fmroberts2

And James (@silversea_starsong) suggested I might ask:
@anewmark
@madily
@u_phantasticus
@bridgetspencer
@nathanfrench

So please, if you get this message, and are interested in any way, let me know. Other iNatters that I have not listed here or just anyone who loves nature, would be welcome to come along too.

Of course if you yourself would like to meet up with me on another day, or you want me to look at some shells for you, that could be done separately. I will be in the Moonlight Beach Motel for some hours on every single day of my trip.

Happy iNatting to all, and best wishes,

Susan

Are you planning to do any tide pooling?

Posted by juliabohemian 9 months ago

Ah Julia, you can probably tell me if there are going to be any decent low tides while I am out there?

Posted by susanhewitt 9 months ago

I love tide pooling if and when I get the chance.

Posted by susanhewitt 9 months ago

Thanks Julia!

However, I can't easily get to La Jolla, and also at 75 y. o. I am not good at getting up in the middle of the night for an early morning low tide.

Do you see any daytime lows that are half decent?

Susan

10/30 has a negative tide at 5:14 PM. 10/31 at 6:04 PM. 11/1 at 6:59 PM. 11/12 has a 2:36 PM. 11/13 is at 3:13 PM. 11/14 at 3:55 PM.

I could probably make it on 11/13 or 11/14.

Posted by juliabohemian 9 months ago

Would you be going to La Jolla?

I suppose Swami's might also be sort of OK on a very low tide...

Posted by susanhewitt 9 months ago

I see that those minus tides all occur after sunset, except for the afternoon low on Monday 10/30 and the afternoon lows on Sunday 11/12 and Monday 11/13.

I am looking forward to also hearing from anyone else other than @juliabohemian.

Hello, I am happy to meet up! Not sure my availability yet, but I'll try to come any time I'm free. The low tides are at night (which is the best for critters), and Swami's is pretty good for tidepooling at negative tides if people are okay with a lot of stairs and very early mornings.

Posted by u_phantasticus 8 months ago

Hello @u_phantasticus , Elena,

I am not necessarily planning on making the group outing a tide-pooling outing, I just wanted to ask Julia what was possible in case I wanted to try to tide-pool.

For the dates during which I will be in Encinitas, I don't see any minus tides that occur during the night time, except the minus 0.4 foot tide on Tuesday 31st October, which happens 4 minutes after sunset.

No problem! San Elijo is always fun and interesting. If it's not too hot, Manchester Preserve in Encinitas is just a bit inland from there and has some nice quiet trails.

Wish I could join, but I'm studying abroad in Australia this year. Appreciate the invite though! Hope you have a great time :)

Posted by jmillsand 8 months ago

Yes Elena, San Elijo could be good again.

And thanks Jonathan -- I assume that SoCal can't really compete with the iNatting where you currently are in Australia! Maybe see you next year!

Posted by susanhewitt 8 months ago

Elena -- Manchester Preserve might be very nice -- thanks for the suggestion!

Posted by susanhewitt 8 months ago

Hello!

Sorry for my delay. I've been up to my eyeballs with work. I agree with Elena's suggestion of Manchester Preserve and would also suggest Crest Canyon (an extension of Torrey Pines State Park that has some great plants!) and Del Mar Mesa Preserve that is also a wonderful place full of oaks and galls and other San Diego treats.

I have some work travel sprinkled throughout your dates, however once there is a plan in order, if I can align, I'd be happy to.

Thank you for thinking of me.

Hello Madeleine!

Thanks for your suggestions -- I will be happy to look them both up.

I also hope I get to see you.

I think I will start a new journal post page, as this one is getting quite full.

I started a new journal post and there I said:

I am currently leaning towards having the outing be in the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve again, as it was last year.

Please tell me what you think.
