Tanager Wasp Eating Behavior

A group of Travis Audubon Bird watchers observed a male Summer Tanager 25 feet up in a tree feed on the larval combs of a wasp nest hanging from a small branch of a tree. It was perched below the wasp nest and was able to extend its neck high enough for its bill to crack open the larval cases. We watched it for about 15 minutes fill up on the larvae at which time it decided to fly away.
