Calling all DC-area iNaturalists -- it's time for an end-of-summer gathering, to visit a very special place in Prince George's County Maryland.
Our last trip to Meadowood Recreation Area in Fairfax County, Virginia was fantastic (see @muir's journal post), following previous trips to Woodend Sanctuary in Montgomery County, Maryland (see @carrieseltzer 's journal post) and Rock Creek Park in DC (see @treegrow 's journal post).
Inside the Beltway in Prince George's County, just a short drive from Suitland Metro Station (Green Line), Suitland Bog is one of the Mid-Atlantic's best and most well studied Magnolia Bogs (a globally-rare endangered ecosystem). A variety of carnivorous plants, as well as other rare and threatened plants thrive at Suitland Bog. There are nice trails and a boardwalk to comfortably traverse through the sights of the bog and surrounding parkland. Suitland Bog Natural Area is managed by the M-NCPPC Department of Parks and Recreation, in Prince George's County, Maryland. The bog is open to the public from dawn to sunset.
The plan is to meet at the Suitland Bog parking area on Suitland Road. I will try to arrive around 10am, and we will explorer the meadows, trails, pine barrens, and of course, Suitland Bog. To reach me, my cell phone # is (24O) 429-5O42.
Please add a comment below if you need a ride, or can provide a ride, and we will try to carpool to the extent possible. We can work to coordinate picking up some folks from Suitland Metro Station (Green Line) beforehand.
If you haven't attended one of these gatherings before, all are welcome! They are loosely organized and fun, very informal, and people can come and go as they please. The group usually spreads out and moves at a naturalist's pace. Impromptu picnics are known to occur. It's an amazing group to be with at a really amazing place, you won't want to miss it!
Sunday September 10th, 10 am (or anytime you can make it).

I'm planning on coming. If somebody could give me a ride from the Suitland Metro that would be great, but Uber/Lyft should also work.
Would be thrilled to have you @treegrow, I'd be glad to pick you up.
I will be there.
It looks like I'll be able to get there and my husband will be coming with me. Looking forward to meeting everyone and exploring the bog.
Forgot to tag @muir!
Might be able to make it there early, then leave round or before noon. If I do end up going, see everyone there!
It should be great weather tomorrow. So far I think we are expecting:
@abookb and husband Dave
@muir with wife and son
@peggyo and husband
@judygva and friend
@treegrow and I
@whodamanhd
I hope all can still make it, and I still encourage others to try to join, I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow morning at the bog!
I forgot to tag @jlechtm!! Hope it's not too late.
I'll be there!
See you tomorrow!
It would be so great to have you @serenella and @lookandsee, see you there.
What a phenominal excursion today, perfect weather! Next time we should remember to bring nametags to make it an extra great way to meet new people. Looking forward to see thoes observations!
@mellis, Thanks so much for organizing a trip to such a special place.
This was such a fun and interesting day made even better by getting to meet everyone! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Michael.
@mellis Thanks for a great day & thanks for the ride. Lots of interesting stuff in that bog. Hope you didn't run out of gas on the way back.
Thanks everyone, turns out the special Milkweed we saw in the meadow is Clasping Milkweed (Asclepias amplexicaulis), I haven't seen it in the wild before, so very exciting for me.

I got gas right after, @treegrow and got very into the flowers blooming near our maintenance yard fuel pumps, check out http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/7871228
Sorry I couldn't make it, something came up last minute. Let me know next time though!
What a great day! I enjoyed every minute! Thanks!
I'm sorry I missed this one! Sounds like a great place that I'll have to visit another time. Everyone on this thread should definitely get ready for the Anacostia Virtual Bioblitz taking place Sept 21-24 in the entire Anacostia River Watershed. Definitely join that project and check out what they have planned, or just explore on your own if you live, work, or play in the Anacostia watershed!
Hey everyone! Wanted to make sure you know about the upcoming ID party at Casey Trees on SUNDAY. Please sign up. Hope to see some of you there! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/anacostia-bioblitz-identification-party-tickets-37918288622
darn. We were out of town... hopefully next time.
