Triodanis hunt and prairie walk!

Hi @texslm @kathrynwells333 @kimberlietx @itmndeborah @lulubelle @katermorgan @gwaithir @haleydaniels @kaitlynn7 @aguilita

Do you all want to go on a Triodanis hunt? I have two spots in mind, one is Barn Owl Ridge at LLELA, and the other is this little deep-sand prairie in my neighborhood that has unique findings.

Kimberlie likes the little prairie because it has T. holzingeri. Unfortunately, the Violet Blue-eyed Mary is gone dormant by now. That site has access to the upper reaches of Lewisville Lake. The only issue is parking. We'd just have to kinda spread out in the neighborhood along the streets. And...it's technically USCOE property, but there is no fence:)

I can be free the weekend of May 22nd, either Saturday or Sunday or the following weekend May 29th or 30th. We can even do both prairies if you'd like. Not sure if any of you can get on that side of LLELA very often.

My little neighborhood prairie species list is here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/paloma-creek-pollinative-prairie

Let me know your thoughts and what you would like to do. And feel free to add 'a few peeps' if I missed someone.

Jaime

I'll just add that DFW has 6 of the 7 species in this genus, and hopefully we can find most of them and talk about the way to ID them. And BTW, I challenged Jaime to find as many species as she could during the CNC and she found 4 and possibly a 5th species! That's amazing!

Posted by kimberlietx almost 3 years ago

Would love to join, if I can! I found three Triodanis species and would love to see the others.

Posted by kathrynwells333 almost 3 years ago

Sounds amazing! I'm open any of the dates you mentioned. I love that pocket prairie, and LLELA, so either or both is a win

Posted by texslm almost 3 years ago

I think the small prairie is a good idea. Next question, do we want to get there May 22nd around 5:30pm and then some of us may like to moth a little,

Or

Saturday May 22nd 10 am start??

Or another day is better for you?

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

May 22nd works for me. I'm open either time, too.

Posted by kimberlietx almost 3 years ago

I could do either or both days. I am open to either or both times, but would love to do some mothing as well!

Posted by lulubelle almost 3 years ago

I would love to join you, the only date I cannot make is Saturday May 22. So if that's the date that works best for most of you, please have a wonderful outing and take lots of photos of the Bur/Post Oak! If it turns out to be another day, just let me know when to show up where. Kate

Posted by katermorgan almost 3 years ago

How about Saturday May 29th at 5:30 till when we are done mothing. I really want to show Kate this really old bur/post oak out there at the small sandy woodbine formation prairie. Who can do May 29th at 5:30 and stay to moth?

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

May 29th at 5:30 pm works for me, Jaime!

Posted by kathrynwells333 almost 3 years ago

Unfortunately, I cannot make the 29th. I work Fri, Sat & Sun nights that weekend. I look forward to seeing what you find!

Posted by lulubelle almost 3 years ago

I'll do both dates!! I love hanging out there. May 22nd at 5:30 to moth close, and May 29th 5:30 to moth close. That way everyone who wants to can come. You should park on Cardinal Way, Aubrey Texas at the north end of the cul-de-sac. The path to the prairie is in-between two houses (I'll post those addresses later). The rough GPS location is Lat: 33.229011Lon: -96.939736. My cell is 940-597-5828.

I got Kate and Kathryn down for the 29th. Lulu and Kim for the 22nd, right? And anyone else who hasn't responded is cool to drop by if they can.

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

May 22nd at 5:30 pm also works for me. ;-) Since you're planning on both, I'll let you know which one I'll attend as time draws nearer.

Posted by kathrynwells333 almost 3 years ago

I'll have to stick with the 22nd, and I probably won't be able to stay for mothing. It's rained SO MUCH that I haven't been able to collect enough specimens so I have to plan to visit another location on the 23rd if the weather cooperates.

Posted by kimberlietx almost 3 years ago

Saturday May 29 at 5:30, I'm eager to meet the tree! Oh & you guys too!

Posted by katermorgan almost 3 years ago

I will be there on the 22nd!

Posted by lulubelle almost 3 years ago
Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

I'Il be there on the 22nd, possible 29th also

Posted by texslm almost 3 years ago

@annikaml here you go! Hope you can stop by one of the days. I’m really interested in what would show up at the black lights.

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago
Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

I would love to join you. I'm available both of the dates you mentioned. Since you are planning to put up black-lights do you want me bring my setup?

Posted by annikaml almost 3 years ago

Hi! The address to shoot for is 1200 Cardinal way Aubrey tx. Walk down the storm water channel in between the two houses and you will find a huge post oak on the right, and path to the little sandy prairie on the left.

I will have two moth set ups, but feel free to bring your own.

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

Sounds fun! I can make May 29th :)

Posted by haleydaniels almost 3 years ago

Hi Everyone! Looks like a 50% chance of rain right now for this Saturday evening. Of course you can't really tell about the weather around here until like an hour before:)

I will plan on still going out there at 5:30 to mothing end, unless the weather becomes more than light misting. I'll update on this post.

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

I thought we were doing LLELA tomorrow? I agree we will probably get rained out...

Posted by kimberlietx almost 3 years ago

No, I was just going to do the small prairie by my house at the Cardinal Way address both weekends. The forecast is still holding at around 50% chance of precipitation. Time and time again, I have found that 50% doesn't mean a whole lot and you can't be sure until the day of. So, I'll be at the little prairie tomorrow at 5:30pm, unless the radar suggests around 3 to 5pm that a considerable amount of rain is on the way. I know that makes planning and traveling difficult to work out, so I totally understand if you want to make the call earlier. Hope it all works out! Been excited about this all week.

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

I’m in for one or both days, weather permitting! I’ll plan on coming tonight if we’re not rained out. (@rick57, too.)

Posted by lisa281 almost 3 years ago

Unfortunately, I won't be there tonight.

Posted by lulubelle almost 3 years ago

I'm going to cancel for tonight as well. It's 80%+ coverage 5pm-8pm on my app, and it takes me an hour to get there. I'd love to reschedule if this rain ever stops......

Posted by kimberlietx almost 3 years ago

Don’t blame you. I’m still planning on going. Looks like we will get a shower around 5-6pm, then it drops. .02-.10” expected. If the rain subsides, should be primo mothing conditions.

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

I have to drop today due to an unexpected conflict. Arrrgh! was looking forward to it. But I should be there on the 29th. Hope the weather holds today for everyone going

Posted by texslm almost 3 years ago

I'm cancelling today, too, due to the weather. Looking forward to next weeks meet up!

Posted by annikaml almost 3 years ago

We’re going to wait and hope for better luck next week, too.

Posted by lisa281 almost 3 years ago

No worries! Hopefully next week will work for y’all! I think Brand, Molly, Spencer, and Kaitlynn are going to meet still when it’s for sure clear.

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

Jaime, I won't be there tonight either. Sad face. :-( But, I look forward to your moth observations! Hope to see you next Saturday.

Posted by kathrynwells333 almost 3 years ago

Sounds good Kathryn!!

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

Hi Everyone! Brand, Spencer, Molly, Kaitlynn, David, Chloe and I explored in some light rain last Sat night. We got 59 species so far, with some (I think maybe 5 or so) being the first observations for Denton County. Here they are: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?on=2021-05-22&place_id=any&project_id=paloma-creek-pollinative-prairie&subview=table&verifiable=any

For this Saturday, looks like the rain will be mostly in the morning. So fingers crossed for meeting up!
Jaime

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

Awesome, Jaime; great work, y'all!

Posted by kathrynwells333 almost 3 years ago

Because Chloe has invited a couple of her friends this Saturday, David and I will still be going to our little neighborhood prairie this Saturday. But...this is happening, too. Wish I could be at two places at once, or just be better with keeping up with LLELA events! https://www.facebook.com/events/952952008868734

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

So "next Saturday" is tomorrow! Are we still planning on the hike and do we have a planned time and location to meet? I will have a long drive so I don't plan to stay for the mothing.

Posted by katermorgan almost 3 years ago

Yes! I will be out at small prairie at 5:30pm tomorrow. You should park close to 1200 Cardinal Way, Aubrey TX. I can meet you on the street. Then, we will walk between two houses down a path to the little prairie behind the houses. My cell phone number is 940-597-5828. It's pretty wild but easily walkable (some bullnettle, etc.), so protective footwear and pants, with bug spray is needed. There are no cleared trails, so we will be 'wading' through prairie plants that are as high as the wooly whites, but for the most part lower like the Lanceleaf Blanketflower and Spiderworts. It's a small prairie, so it will be a slow exploration rather than a hike. And! That big tree is a post oak:) The mothing will start at dark, but feel free to come and go as you like.

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

@lisa281 @rick57 @kathrynwells333 @aguilita @texslm do you think you all can make it tomorrow? No worries if not:)

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

I'm planning to be there.

Posted by annikaml almost 3 years ago

I will be there and I'm looking forward to meeting at least some of you!

Posted by katermorgan almost 3 years ago

I'll be there rain or shine today!

Posted by texslm almost 3 years ago

Lisa and I are planning to be there today.

Posted by rick57 almost 3 years ago

I'm going to have to miss today. Yall have fun!

Posted by haleydaniels almost 3 years ago

Yay! Can’t wait to see you all!

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

Bummer! About to head up there and come out to a completely flat tire. :-( Probably means I have to sit out this one too, unless I can get a new tire on there quickly. It should be an awesome mothing evening today with warm conditions, partly cloudy, and very little wind. Have fun if I can't make it.

Posted by annikaml almost 3 years ago

Oh no @annikaml I hope you can find one! Was soooo looking forward to mothing with you on this great day for mothing!

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

Jaime, I'm so sorry I didn't make it. I do look forward to meeting up with you sometime soon!

Posted by kathrynwells333 almost 3 years ago

No worries, Kathryn!!

Ok, so from the Monday that @kimberlietx came out and the two Saturday blitzes, we captured at least 142 new taxa on this site! Collectively, we made 430 observations with 208 taxa. The little sandy prairie is up to 464 taxa now.

Thanks for coming out, and if you couldn't make it but still want to meet up with me, shoot me DM and let's go explore sometime!

Posted by baxter-slye almost 3 years ago

That's awesome, Jaime! I certainly will look forward to exploring with you.
