Heads up: Some or all of the identifications affected by this split may have been replaced with identifications of Lepomis megalotis. This happens when we can't automatically assign an identification to one of the output taxa. Review identifications of Lepomis megalotis 58635

Taxonomic Split 143684 (Committed on 29-08-2024)

Solis and aquilensis were recently accepted by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and added to iNat. These two species had been previously IDd as being megalotis. With them being added as species megalotis should be split.

Main source used by Eschmeyer's for elevating the species was Kim et al. 2022, and should as be a guide to the atlases for the split.

Can we hit the red button?

I think it should be good to go.
There are some areas along the range boundaries where it is difficult to atlas as well as some areas where we just don't have good information on which species it should be, so hopefully it is not too destructive in those areas. Worst case scenario though it is either going to keep the ID it already is or will bump it to complex.
