Needed Bird Species for the City Nature Challenge: Get 'Em TODAY!

Dear San Mateo County Birders -

Today (Monday) is the last day of the City Nature Challenge. There are a number of missing bird species which, if we were not under the Shelter-in-Place order, would be fairly easy for one or two people to find. But now we are thrown onto our individual five-mile radius limitations (it is as if we've leveled up in a game!), so it is trickier.

Here are the missing birds (in a semi-taxonomic order; I've not yet memorized the latest AOU order):

Northern Pintail
Snow Goose
Cackling Goose
Wood Duck
Pacific Loon
Red-throated Loon
Red-necked Grebe
Brandt’s Cormorant
Pelagic Cormorant
Wandering Tattler
Red-necked Phalarope
Bonaparte’s Gull
Elegant Tern
Pigeon Guillemot
Cassin’s Auklet
Swainson’s Hawk
Red-breasted Sapsucker
Hairy Woodpecker
Rock Wren
American Pipit
Swainson’s Thrush
Hermit Thrush
Black-throated Gray Warbler

A few birds not likely in San Mateo county, but possible in Santa Clara - (Black-chinned Hummingbird; Phainopepla; Bell’s Sparrow; Blue Grosbeak)

Looks like we may have Hermit Thrush and Hairy Woodpecker taken care of already - you folks are fab!

Unfortunately, I'm trapped in Santa Cruz County, which isn't included in the City Nature Challenge. (I need to remember to try to remedy that in 2021) So, I can't help. I hope others get them for us, though!

Dang! I sort of figured that, but wasn't sure if you lived close enough to make a run for either the San Mateo or Santa Clara county border. My phone reminded me this morning that I was supposed to be on a birdathon trip with Ryan Phillips today along Summit Road on the Santa Clara boundary...

Is their a "Project Group" for this years City Nature Challenge that we have to add to our sightings for them to count?

It is all done automatically, but you should join anyway!
