NPSO's Native Plant Appreciation Month Bioblitz 2023's Journal

12 April, 2023

Fantastic . . . but more to do!

We have had fantastic participation in NPSO's first state-wide floral bioblitz with over 4200 observations of over 500 species! Thank you all for your participation. You are awesome!

There is still some work to do though as there are nearly 1200 observations that need confirmed ids. Some of these are impossible to confirm but maybe a few more can be so I encourage you to take another look at the observations that need ID to see if we can up our Research Grade observations.

Oh, and let me say "thank you" again!

4 days in

Given the weather it's rather remarkable that we've gotten nearly 1100 observations of 265 species by 224 observers! Thanks also to the 107 identifiers who have helped to identify or confirm the species sighted. Trillium ovatum remains the most common (92 reports). Observations have occurred across Western Oregon and even some observations in Eastern Oregon. While it remains a bit rainy in Western Oregon, the temps are warming up so that should make flora exploring easier! Have fun out there!

Day 1 results

Day 1 of the bioblitz brought 250 observations, including 107 species, by 57 observers. This is rather remarkable given the stormy weather across much of Oregon in April 1, 2023. The most commonly observed native species? Trillium ovatum. All of the observations were from Western Oregon. It's a great start. Here's hoping for improving weather!

Tomorrow!

"Tomorrow, tomorrow
I love ya tomorrow
You're always, a day away".
Thanks to "Annie" for that memory! Tomorrow is the start of the bioblitz. Rain is predicted in the Willamette Valley, but gee, we live in Oregon, it's spring, it rains a lot. There are wildflowers to be found even in the rain. Happy hunting and hoping for better weather soon.

Less than 4 days!

It's less than 4 days until the bioblitz. I know in my section of the state (Corvallis) it's been rather cold and rainy and not many natives have flowered yet but I'm sure in other areas it's a different story. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone finds!

It's almost time for Native Plant Appreciation Month and the first NPSO statewide bioblitz!

April is Native Plant Appreciation Month around the state of Oregon. It's an excellent time to observe early wildflowers in much of the state. By joining the bioblitz you can help us document flowering plants in the first 10 days of April so that over time we can compare plant presence and flowering. So go outside and look for flowering wild plants! See you in the wilderness!
