Project Update - May 2022

We didn’t have any new Project Members this month. If you know of anyone, please direct them to our page!

May is the month of the great spring migration for many warblers and other birds. We also start seeing more dragonflies, butterflies and moths, while many of our plants start to bloom. We have also had some very warm days, which means lots of people out and about in the parks, recording observations through iNaturalist. We also had a mini BioBlitz at Edison Woods. Thanks to all that attended!

The project increased from 3881 to 4437 observations (+556), 1248 to 1335 species (+87), and 129 to 137 observers (+8).

Our number of Research Grade observations increased from 2552 to 2855 (+303). This equates to a Research Grade percentage of 64.68% (down slightly from 65.76%).

In total, there were 508 observations added to the project within May 2022. The observations include 181 insects, 148 plants, 128 birds, 21 arachnids, 8 mammals, 7 fungi, 5 mollusks, 4 amphibians, 4 reptiles, and 1 protozoa.

Of these, there were 295 species recorded. American Robin was the most observed species (10 occasions), followed by Common Blue Violet (6 occasions). Tree Swallow and Gray Catbird were both observed on 5 occasions.

The observations came from 19 observers. The top five (six) were @mikehensley75 (213), @briarrose777 (116), @martyndrabik (93), @phylomoore (27), and @wdemers (15).

The top observations of the month include:
Forest Wolf Spider (Hogna frondicola) - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/117924180
Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/118212241
Eastern Whip-Poor-Will (Antrostomus vociferus) - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/114626377
Eye-spotted Lady Beetle (Anatis mali) - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/117994789
Hound’s Tongue (Cynoglossum officinale) - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/116982346

Thanks to all for contributing to the project. We don’t have a BioBlitz in June, so our next one will be on July 5th at Hoffman Forest. Please also look out for our other upcoming programs via https://eriemetroparks.org/programs/
