Project Update - April 2022

We didn’t have any new Project Members this month. If you know of anyone, please direct them to our page!

Spring is well and truly here now, even if we did have some more snow before it finally came to stay. Spring means more sun, more warmth, and of course, more opportunities to see wildlife!

Note that some historical observations were added to the project. Sometimes iNaturalist has a hiccup with capturing the GPS coordinates, meaning that an observation can be placed a mile or so away from the actual observation. Here is a URL that can look at every observation WITHIN Erie County that IS NOT in the Erie MetroParks project. Simply replace USERNAME with your iNaturalist Username. I found at least 10 records this way that needed to be corrected.

The project increased from 3583 to 3882 observations (+299), 1191 to 1248 species (+57), while the number of observers stayed at 129 (+0).

Our number of Research Grade observations increased from 2307 to 2552 (+245). This equates to a Research Grade percentage of 65.74% (up from 64.39%).

In total, there were 293 observations added to the project within April 2022. The observations include 147 birds, 44 plants, 36 insects, 17 mammals, 12 amphibians, 7 fungi, 6 arachnids, 5 mollusks, 5 reptiles, and 1 fish.

Of these, there were 160 species recorded. American Robin was recorded the most (10 occasions), with Bald Eagle and Red-winged Blackbird both observed on 9 occasions. Spring Peeper, White-tailed Deer, and Great Egret were all observed on 8 occasions.

The observations came from 6 observers. The top five (six) were @briarrose777 (114), @martyndrabik (80), @mikehensley75 (78), @jenniferc3 (19), @llsparks (1), @pdwight553 (1).
