Annual NABA butterfly count at Joshua Tree.

SAVE THE DATE – JOSHUA TREE FALL BUTTERFLY COUNT PLANNED for Oct. 11

WHEN: Friday, October 11, 2024, 08:30 AM to 4:30 PM

WHERE TO MEET: Parking Lot of Joshua Tree Visitor Center, 6554 Park Boulevard, in the town of Joshua Tree

WHAT TO BRING: Come dressed for a day in the field with plenty of water, snacks, hat, sunscreen, binoculars, cameras.
Long pants and sturdy footwear are recommended.

The Fall Butterfly Count takes place in a 15-mile diameter circle centered on Hidden Valley, under research permit JOTR-2024-SCI-0004. Counters will be divided into groups to cover different sections of the area. We would like to know if you plan to come, if you can participate all day or morning only, and how much hiking you are up for. If you have participated on past counts and there is a particular area you would like to cover, please let us know.

Please RSVP to this message (iNat: xranger2013). Non-NPS observers will sign up as volunteers on count day. If you will need a volunteer pass to enter the park, please let us know when you RSVP.

Counts area weather dependent. We expect low numbers of butterflies due to the dry conditions.
