Prompt for Week of October 4th

Hello again! In honor of Dr. Sharma's research (and with Halloween around the corner), we are asking you to find an arachnid this week. In a study that Dr. Sharma conducted, he and his colleagues discovered that horseshoe crabs are a member of the class Arachnida! Read about it here: https://phys.org/news/2019-03-horseshoe-crabs-relatives-spiders-scorpions.html

This Week's Prompt

Happy Thursday everyone! We hope the exam went well. This week's prompt (a few days late) is this: Something you found under a rock or log.

Remember, it needs to be a living (or very recently deceased) organism that can be identified to species name! Have fun exploring the underbelly of the natural world ;)

Assignments for this week!

Happy Monday, folks! Now that you all have gotten the swing of things, we want to increase the challenge just a little bit.

This week, we will have two prompts and a requirement that you confirm the identification of another student's observation. It is important to look at the observations your classmates are making! iNaturalist is intended to be a collaborative platform.

So, here are your three assignments:

  1. Make an observation of an aquatic macrophyte
  2. Make an observation of an invasive plant species (you may have to make several observations, or do some identification in the moment, to determine whether what you've found is invasive or not!)
  3. Confirm the identification of an observation made by one of your classmates. Look through the observations in our project and see if there are any that you know and can help with! We require that you confirm at least one.

Email Haley Briel or Jeremiah Yahn if you have any questions!

Festive Fall Prompts!

Hi everyone!

Happy Halloween week! We here in the coordinator hallway at Noland are loving the autumnal festivities. To celebrate, we have a couple new iNaturalist prompts for you!

This week's prompts are:

  1. Find (and identify) a fungus! Mushrooms grow best when there has been prolonged periods of wet weather. The recent rain should be helpful to you!
  2. Find (and identify) a tree with colorful fall leaves! As Dr. McCulloh mentioned in lecture, some species display brighter colors than others. Has the weather this fall been conducive to the production of anthocyanins?
  3. Confirm one observation made by a classmate

Stay tuned for our next park outing. You will receive some prompts at that gathering along with some guided assistance in finding them. We are looking forward to seeing you then!
