I started birding when I was about 12. We always had bird feeders in the yard, and my uncle took me birding around Ottawa and on May trips to Point Pelee. In 2020, I started birding much more frequently, and year-round. In 2021, I started photographing birds. However, I post birds on eBird.

In 2021, I started photographing butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, and started using iNaturalist in 2022 so I could record my sightings. Then my daughter, Shannon, got really interesting in moths and we have been using a white sheet and UV lights to observe moths in our backyard and elsewhere. In 2023, we bought two 50-watt UV lamps (365 and 395 nm) and a macro lens for a DSLR camera and started getting many more moths at night, with much better images. I shoot and process the images, and Shannon posts them on iNat. Too bad we can't share our observations like we can on eBird! We also started observing moths at night on canoe trips (Georgian Bay, QEII Wildlands) and added many new species!
