My name is Matthew Berg, and I'm a high school teacher and professional wildlife biologist. My graduate work looked at how birds responded to fire as a restoration tool in jack pine forests in northeastern Minnesota (St. Croix State Park). My current research areas include birds (especially passerines), forestry, aquatic plants, odonates, Karner blue butterflies, and freshwater mussels. I am competent at terrestrial plants including grasses and sedges, but still have a lot to learn about butterflies, and insects in general. I'm using iNaturalist to immediately report rare sightings, and to improve my skills with taxa I'm less familiar with. I am also exploring ways to incorporate the platform into my classroom with my research students.
